Virtual Learning
Virtual learning is a learning experience that is enhanced through utilizing computer software, the internet, multimedia applications and videoconferencing to deliver instruction to students. The virtual classroom provides a learning environment in which teachers and students can present course materials, engage and interact with one another and work together in groups. The platform enables the sharing of resources and allows for the various stages of assessment.
Virtual learning requires a different instructional design than classroom instruction. The momentum for learning shifts from the teacher to the learner. To be successful, the learner must have self-discipline to manage their time and avoid distractions, and must have access to the appropriate technology.
There are also many advantages of virtual learning that enable students to engage to a greater extent. Virtual learning allows for increased access to educational resources, experiential learning through virtual reality and mastery of content at the student’s own pace. As the process of virtual learning expands, teachers will have greater access to data for accessing student learning.
One size never fits all. A combination of face-to-face interaction in a classroom and virtual learning may be argued as the best scenario combining technology and the need for personal interaction. When personal interaction is contraindicated due to safety and health concerns, teachers are left to quickly immerse themselves in virtual learning techniques. A variety of resources related to virtual learning are provided on this website. See Virtual Learning Resources.
